MDOT urges preparation for another round of winter weather

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The Mississippi Department of Transportation is preparing for another round of winter weather that is expected to move through North and Central Mississippi this evening.

The National Weather Service is reporting that counties in North and Central Mississippi could possibly experience freezing rain that could result in ice accumulation Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.

The following are counties that could experience road problems due to the inclement weather conditions: Attala, Bolivar, Carroll, Choctaw, Claiborne, Clay, Grenada, Hinds, Holmes, Humphreys, Issaquena, Kemper, Lauderdale, Leake, Leflore, Lowndes, Madison, Montgomery, Newton, Neshoba, Noxubee, Oktibbeha, Rankin, Scott, Sunflower, Warren, Washington, Webster, Winston and Yazoo Counties

The public is encouraged to limit travel only in case of emergency in the affected areas. MDOT also encourages the traveling public to pay close attention to weather and travel advisories issued by the National Weather Service, the Mississippi Highway Patrol and local law enforcement.

MDOT crews will continue to monitor the state's interstates and highways. Motorists are advised to stay off of roadways affected by winter weather, but should follow these tips if required to travel in case of emergency:

  • Buckle up
  • Slow down, especially when driving in winter weather conditions
  • Allow enough space between your vehicle and other vehicles
  • Brake early to allow plenty of time to stop
  • Brake gently and never slam on brakes
  • Turn on lights to be more visible to other motorists
  • Do not use cruise control or overdrive
  • Stay alert and look farther ahead in traffic than you normally do
  • Drive safely

The public is asked to report patches of ice accumulation that could impact travel to local law enforcement agencies.
