OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) -

An Ocean Springs woman who grabbed headlines more than two decades ago by undergoing a double lung transplant passed away this week. Monica Goretski died Sunday night as a result of chronic rejection of the donated lungs and kidney failure. She was 47-years-old.

In 1993, at age 26, Goretski underwent the transplant surgery at a North Carolina hospital after she was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis. This past April she celebrated 20 years with donated lungs.

Funeral arrangement have been set for Thursday at the St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Ocean Springs. Visitation starts at 10am.
