JEFFERSON COUNTY, AL (WBRC) -

Two weeks ago a snowstorm caught many educators by surprise. Thousands of students across central Alabama were forced to say at schools because it was too dangerous to try and get them home.

Educators are faced making another call this week about calling off school or delaying school over the next couple of days.

"It's a borderline situation. You want to get in a couple of days of school but safety is the most important thing for us. We are concerned about the safety of the kids," Dr. Stephen Nowlin, Jefferson County School Superintendent, said.

Nowlin said the school system wants to wait as long as possible to make a decision so they have the most current information while at the same time he wants to give parents as much notice as possible so they can make arrangements.

"In our case we have a very large footprint as a county as a school system as being a transportation map," Nowlin said.

Nowlin said the school system has two snow days to make up for lost time. The school system lost three days of classroom instruction two weeks ago because of the weather but Governor Robert Bentley had declared a state of emergency so the school systems can apply not to make up those days.

If schools lose one or two days this week Nowlin said students and teachers may be forced to work Monday which is President's Day.

"We were scheduled to be off then as a weather day and also as a holiday but as a possible weather makeup day and since as a school system e missed hose days already we intend to go in," Nowlin said.

The superintendent said adding time to a day and working on weekends are not as effective for the students.
