HOUMA, LA (WVUE) - A 48 year old Houma man has been arrested, accused of stealing plants from a Catholic church, then trying to get the church to buy them back. Police were called to St. Lucy's Church on Aycock Street in Houma to investigate a theft report.

Church members told police investigators that they believed a man driving a gold colored Malibu had stolen some of the church's plants. After the theft, he then reportedly came back to the church to try to re-sell them.

According to police, when the theft suspect was confronted by clergy members and parishioners that the plants belonged to the church, he reportedly fled the area with the plants inside of his car.

Later during the day, Houma Police received a call regarding a gold colored Malibu that was parked at the intersection of Maple Ave and Park Ave, occupied by a male driver. During this investigation, officers determined it was the same car involved in the theft at St. Lucy's Church.

Alvin J. Lapeyrouse was taken into custody on theft charges. Houma Police investigators say the plants were still inside the car when they made the arrest on Sunday. Detectives also found Lapeyrouse to be in possession of drug paraphernalia and is now facing an additional charge of Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

The stolen plants have been returned back to St. Lucy Church.
