Lady Hornets one win from perfection

Posted: Updated:

The Pelham Lady Hornets have been as good as you can be so far this season.

The Lady Hornets are 22-0, with a chance at 23-0 with their season finale at Brooks County on Saturday.

A win would mean the first unbeaten regular season in Lady Hornet history.

Head coach Antonia Tookes says her team is taking it one game at a time.

"Right around the mid part of the season, when we started gelling, and we were still undefeated, I kind of figured this was going to be a special group," Tookes says."

The players, however, say they knew much earlier.

"We realized when we stepped on the court for tryouts that we could go undefeated," says junior guard Briunna Freeman. "As a team last year, we realized that we could do it with the people coming up already, and so we already had in our mind that we were going to go all the way."

Led by Freeman, the Lady Hornets have run throught virtually everyone they've played. Their closest game was a seven point win over Lowndes in December.

They say the goal of an unbeaten season is one they've chased all year long.

"It's actually like a job to actually keep winning," says Freeman. "It's a little heavy on you, but we still want to win. Once you're used to winning, you don't want to lose."

The Lady Hornets go for the unbeaten regular season Saturday night in Quitman. Tip off is at 6:00 p.m.
