GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

A Gulfport man is in hot water after allegedly exposing a police officer to HIV by spitting in the officer's face.

Gulfport Police Chief Leonard Papania said 51-year-old Benjamin William Lowell was arrested Tuesday for trespassing at a residence on Nancy Lane. Authorities said Lowell became violent when officers attempted to put him in a police cruiser.

Papania said that is when Lowell spit in the face of the arresting officer. Officials said it was known that Lowell was HIV positive.

Papania said Lowell is charged with exposing another to HIV, trespassing, malicious mischief and intimidating a police officer. He is being held at the Harrison County Adult Detention Facility on a combined $77,192.75 bond.
