MS Board of Education votes to abolish Scott County School District

Posted: Updated:
JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The Mississippi Board of Education has voted to abolish the Scott County School District and to ask the governor to declare a State of Emergency in Scott County.

That means the board and superintendent would be deposed and a Conservator appointed.

Earlier Thursday, the Commission on School Accreditation voted unanimously to call for a takeover of the Scott County School District.

The 4,200-student district is rated "B'' under the state's grading system, but conflict between the school board and elected superintendent is the source of concern.

State reports allege superintendent Bingham Moncrief rules through fear and intimidation, but Moncrief says he's the victim of a vendetta.

We will have more information on this as it becomes available.
