Plan in the works to bring new life to Centennial Plaza

Plans to re-develop Gulfport's Centennial Plaza property just got a pretty significant boost. The old VA property is now on the National Register of Historic Places.

Why is that important?

That designation allows Gulfport to apply for tax credits and federal grants. That could equal money that can bring the 59 acre property back to life.

The beachfront property houses ten historic buildings and a warehouse facility. Before it became the VA hospital, the property was given to the federal government for the purpose of military training, but Hurricane Katrina left the property heavily damaged.

Back in 2009, millions of dollars in federal money was spent repairing the property.

Much of that money went to new tile roofs for the historic buildings.

As of tonight, the property sits vacant, but developers say plans are in the works to turn the old VA property into a community oriented marketplace that would include restaurants, retail and hotels.
