Sandston teen dies from injuries in Chickahominy River crash

A Highland Springs High School freshman has died from injuries in a crash following a police chase.

Fifteen-year-old Amanda Irby was taken off life support Wednesday.

"I just froze. I didn't know what to say. I didn't have anything to say. I just broke down," said Irby's close friend, Xavier Sherman, about when he heard about the crash.

Monday night was Irby's birthday. Investigators say she and another woman were riding in a car with Andrew Walters when he sped off after police tried to pull him over. His car crashed into the swamp below and Walters ran. It took rescuers 20 minutes to pull Amanda and the other girl from the water.

"She was a strong girl. She never showed any emotions of her being sad," described Xavier, of a friend he said he talked with every day.

Many are showing emotions, as they mourn the softball player's death. A twitter hashtag reads #FlyHighAmanda.

"She always had a smile on her face," added friend Michael Barron.

"I thought it was pretty tragic, pretty sad. I even cried last night, because when you think about it, life can be taken so quickly," said Desiree Chavis, another classmate who knew Amanda.

Two pinwheels were placed at the crash site. A charm of flowers was placed on a branch, just above where the car plunged into the swamp.

"She would always put everybody before herself, and make sure everybody else was happy before she worried about her own problems," continued Xavier.

Walters is being held at the Henrico County Jail without bond. He is charged with driving on a suspended license, failing to pull over for officers, proving false information to officers and an unrelated assault warrant from Hanover. He may face additional charges in the crash.

The other woman in the crash remains hospitalized.
