WLOX Editorial: Interlock system needed for DUI offenders

There is a move afoot in the state legislature to require those convicted of DUI have a special device installed on their cars that keeps the car from starting if the driver has been drinking. This interlock system detects alcohol and disables the ignition.

Some might say this is unfair and over the top for someone who has paid the debt to society through jail, or fines, or probation. We say, we trusted you not to drive drunk before, but you did anyway.

Now we will only trust you not to drink and drive if you pass the alcohol test every time you crank the car. We support a law requiring the interlock systems for convicted DUI drivers.

That's our opinion, we would like to hear yours. Email your thoughts to editorials@wlox.com.
