Snow? We're still trying to get rid of that sheet of ice...

(Toledo News Now) -

If you're concerned about the thick sheet of ice around your home, driveway, and maybe even on the street in front of your house, you're not alone.

Scott Denker, owner of "The Grounds Guys of Toledo," says, "Many people are concerned about all the snow that is going to be falling from the sky, but there is already a problem on the ground, and the problem is ice."

Many neighborhoods throughout the Toledo area are dealing with ice that was creating during last weekend's brief thaw.

To get these blankets of ice off the sidewalk, try sprinkling them with salt, and then shoveling once the salt has had time to set in. And as they say,
lather, rinse, repeat.

It's best to make sure to work in stages to allow time for the salt to do its thing, and to give yourself time to rest between bouts of shoveling.
Denker says, "I would just try to keep the walks clear in stages, don't try to go out there and do it all at once in one big fell swoop, because it's obviously harder on the body, the snow is heavy."

  • Sand- It provides traction but doesn't melt ice
  • Rock salt- It melts ice but can cause damage to plants and concrete
  • CMA or Calcium Magnesium Acetate. An ice removal product that works a little slower than rock salt and is a littler more expensive, but not as damaging
  • Potassium Chloride. Only works to 12 degrees, but is less damaging as well
  • Calcium Chloride. Fast and effective but leaves oily residue
