Mardi Gras Supplies Store booming with business

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

The good times are rolling at the Mardi Gras Supplies Store on Pass Road. The store is open year round for customers who need to get their Fat Tuesday fix.

This time of year brings an increase in business. Store manager Ashton Ladner gave WLOX an inside look of the stores busiest time of the year.

"When it gets closer to Mardi Gras we stay really busy," said Ladner.

Wondering what items were flying off the shelves the quickest? There is no surprise. It's beads.

"Beads, we sell a lot of beads."

She means a lot, tons of them. They sell so many beads that they have an entire warehouse, bigger than the actual store, to house them.

"This kind of continues all the way down, it's nuts.  We got a pack of guys that get in there and unload like thousands of cases at a time."

The sales aren't just limited to the store. There's also a website that caters to online Mardi Gras shoppers all over the world. For employees, like Jesus Calihua, that only means one thing, no down time.

"10, 20 or 40 cases," said Calihua.

He said that he ships between 200 and 300 orders of beads every day, and beads aren't all the store sells. Tierney Johnson was busy shopping for a party and said the choices are overwhelming.

"I've been here 30 minutes, and I haven't gotten through 1/4 of the store," said Johnson.

That didn't stop her from making some early selections.

"My favorite thing to buy, I love the crowns. I'm like you can't beat a couple of bucks for a crown."

With the store at your fingertips, it should be even easier to make this year's Mardi Gras a hit.

14 years as part of the Ole Miss football program as a coach or player has prepared Matt Luke for this opportunity. Admittedly it doesn't come under the circumstances he might've envisioned. But with a Rebel bloodline that runs 3 generations deep, the position fulfills a lifelong dream. "I can truly tell y'all today that this is my dream job," Luke said Monday at his first press conference as Ole Miss interim head coach. "It's a job that I've been preparing my whole li...

The Pascagoula Panthers open the 2017 football season on the road. In fact, their first three games are road contests. That scheduling quirk may give field turf crews just enough time to get War Memorial Stadium ready for the September 8 home opener. The wet weather in South Mississippi is placing quite the burden on construction workers as they attempt to complete stadium renovations. The project was suppose to be finished before the beginning of Pascagoula's football season.
