GPS tracking leads to arrest in BR shooting, armed robbery

A Baton Rouge man was arrested Saturday morning, for the armed robbery and shooting of two apartment residents, after police used the GPS system of the items he had allegedly stolen to track him down.

Police say the incident happened Friday night around 8:26 p.m. on Bard Ave near N. Sherwood Forest.

According to spokesperson L'Jean McKneely, 19-year-old Derrick Lee Jr. went in to the apartment, armed with a handgun, and he demanded money from a 33-year-old man and a 31-year-old woman.

During the robbery, Lee allegedly shot both victims in the torso. The victims were transported to a nearby hospital and they were treated for moderate injuries. Both are expected to survive.

According to the probable cause report, the victims told BRPD investigators they had known Lee prior to the incident, and they informed the police that Lee had stolen their cell phones, which had GPS tracking capabilities.

The probable cause report also disclosed that when detectives gained access to the GPS tracking system, they discovered the exact location of the stolen cell phone at a residence on Dutton Street.  When authorities arrived at the home, they told an occupant about the investigation, and then dialed one of the victim's cell phone number.

The phone was heard ringing from inside of the residence.

Lee was arrested and charged with 2 counts of attempted 1st degree murder, armed robbery, and false imprisonment. He was also charged with possession of a firearm, resisting an officer, and simple possession of marijuana.

Lee was booked into the EBR Parish Prison.
