Local ministry gives away shoes to those in need

OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) -

Shoes can be expensive. Fortunately for families across the Gulf Coast a local church ministry gave shoes away for free Saturday.

In front of Walmart in Ocean Springs, posters were waved and people yelled "free shoes" while ushering a large crowd over to tables full of footwear. Jennifer Sigales and her family were among dozens of people to receive a free pair of shoes from the Daughters of Faith ministry. According to Sigales, the giveaway could not have come at a better time for her mother.

"She's on disability with 14 kids, so it's kind of hard to come by clothing and shoes right now actually, and I'm in house slippers right now," said Sigales.

Sigales is going to be able to change out of her house shoes and into some real ones thanks to an event that was the vision of Jemina Ballard.

"Last year, when we did it first, we only gave to women. But this year we decided to do men, kids and women. People are able to come and get as many shoes as they would like," said Ballard.

Ballard is the event organizer. She and her fellow Daughters of Faith are excited to see the event grow so much from last year. They started taking shoe donations months ago in all sizes, styles and colors. Now Ballard is able to see the shoes go to those who need them most.

"We actually had one guy who was homeless. He came and got some new sneakers so he could keep on walking."

Daughters of Faith is a women's ministry with Victory International Christian Center in Ocean Springs.
