NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - A S.W.A.T. unit responded to an "active shooter" in New Orleans East according to police.

The incident began at Picture Me Rollin hair salon on the 8000 block of Downman Road around 10:30 a.m. according to NOPD Super Intendent Ronald Serpas.

Eye witnesses say that the gunman walked in talking strangely and foaming at the mouth. He then pulled out a gun and shot one of the barbers in the leg. According to police, 15 people were in the salon at the time. Some of the people inside escaped while others hid in a back room.

According to Serpas, an off-duty police officer was in the barber shop at the time and managed to get out and relay information to police.

Police were able to get the shooter to surrender peacefully according to Serpas. Only one person was shot and they are currently being treated for a non-life threatening wound.

The gunman will also be medically evaluated.
