Post office sting yields loaded handgun, $100,000 worth of cocaine

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

Springfield police stopped $100,000 worth of pure cocaine from hitting their streets Thursday, according to Sergeant John Delaney.

U.S. Postal inspectors had discovered the drugs in two packages, one of which contained four kilos of cocaine. The other package contained two kilos of the drug, Delaney said.

The group of four suspects were arrested after they picked up the boxes at the U.S. Post Office branch on Main Street in Springfield.

Reynaldo Velazquez , 35, Angel Gonzalez, 37, and Evangelina Gonzalez, 47, of Holyoke, and Nefateris Medina, 33, of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, were charged with trafficking more than 200 grams of cocaine. Velazquez was also charged with carrying a firearm while committing a felony.

Velazquez had a .40 caliber Smith and Wesson semi-automatic handgun containing 11 rounds of ammo tucked in his belt. Officers also confiscated $650 in cash from all four suspects, Delaney said.
