HOOVER, AL (WBRC) -

Hoover police rescued at least 100 people who were stranded on I-65 and I-459 overnight due to icy roads and gridlocked traffic. The police department sent three school buses to sweep the interstate looking for stranded drivers.

Police Captain Jim Coker said they offered to take people stuck in cars to nearby shelters He said at least 600 people are staying at warming stations in the Hoover area.

Police continue to run rescue operations along the interstate. Captain Coker said they will run the buses until there's no longer a need.

"We are here to provide public service and we will continue to do so," Captain Coker said.

Roads remain icy and conditions are dangerous for driving. ALDOT says icy conditions could remain on Wednesday into mid-day Thursday. Crews are working around the clock to treat roads and bridges to keep main highways open and clear roads.
