VDOT warning: Low temps make road treatments less effective

Posted: Updated:

Police kept a watchful eye Tuesday night as dozens of cars lined up for dozens of doughnuts. The snow could not keep fans away from the new Krispy Kreme in Chesterfield. However, police and VDOT officials warn it is best to stay off the roads.

"They are a little dangerous for driving, but I live close," said student Nick Roby. "It's not a big deal. I'll just walk it out."

We decided to ride it out with VCU groundskeepers. They were out clearing sidewalks for pedestrians..

"It's a big job," said Eric Wilkerson with VCU. "It's a big campus. but we have a large crew."

VDOT warns their salt treatments are not nearly as effective when temperatures fall below 20 degrees. Temperatures lingered below 20 degrees most of Tuesday evening.

"The message is just to stay off the roads if you possibly can," said Lindsay LeGrand with VDOT. "we're trying to get to all the roads as best we can. We'll have crews out until the job is done."

VDOT crews are working 12 hour rotating shifts.
