Ice causes crashes on area roadways

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Light snow and sleet in the metro caused dangerous driving conditions Tuesday. By eight p.m. Jackson police had investigated 38 accidents with injuries.

During the day a number of vehicles left the roadway after hitting patches of ice.

On I-20 West near Robinson Road an 18 wheeler jackknifed in the median after the driver says he slid on ice. Minutes later another tractor trailer hit the same spot and rear ended a Toyota Tacoma.

The driver of the jackknifed truck, from Queens New York, had just picked up a load in Jackson.

"I heard about bad weather and actually my Aunt Deloris called and asked me had I been looking at the news and she told me to be careful. Coincidentally they are pretty bad," said trucker Jonathan Hood.

David Cox, of Mansfield Ohio, was parked on the roadside after his gray 18 wheeler encountered a stretch of ice.

"Ours was on the bridge when he got over I slid on the bridge when he got over. He didn't cut me off, but there was just not enough room for me," said Cox.

"I slowed down because I saw that there was a bridge about to come up and all of a sudden I got rear ended by an 18 wheeler," said Chris Patterson after being hit from behind by Cox's big rig. "So my advice is, if you can stay off the roads, just definitely do it."

MDOT crews arrived about half an hour later spreading de-icing materials on the I-20 bridge.

At I-20 at the I-220 split another tractor trailer, carrying construction equipment, left the roadway.

It also drove over thick ice beneath a nearby overpass.

Below freezing temperatures could cause ice problems to continue. More de-icing materials are needed on area roadways.
