BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Many in central Alabama will have to rely on the kindness of strangers on Tuesday night after experiencing traffic issues with the winter weather.

On Highway 280 near Lakeshore Parkway, several cars were abandoned by drivers who found they could handle the hilly part of the road. The nearby Hampton Inn in Mountain Brook is allowing drivers to keep warm in the lobby. As of 6 p.m., the lobby was reported to be packed.

Sand trucks in the area are having particular problems with the Highway 280 jam. The abandoned cars and the ice are preventing sand from being spread in spots that need sand the most. Birmingham Mayor Willliam Bell says the trucks are working "little-by-little" to get the roads drivable throughout Birmingham.

Hotels throughout Central Alabama are booked solid with stranded motorists, but there is help out there for those without a place to stay.

The Red Cross Finder App can help motorists get in touch with the Red Cross. Those without smartphones can call the Red Cross at 1-800-Red Cross (1-800-733-2767).

Some groups on Facebook are also offering support. Toomer's for Tuscaloosa and Stranded Motorists Help Jan 28 2014 are working to help out those who are without a place to shelter for the night.

Those who are able are asked to help those in need. The cold weather can be very dangerous and you could save a life by just offering a little help.
