SOUTH MISSISSIPPI (WLOX) - The Biloxi-Ocean Springs Bridge closed Tuesday night around 8:30pm, and officials expected it to stay closed until morning.
Several other major bridges across South Mississippi closed in the later afternoon/early evening hours of Tuesday, including the Bay St. Louis Bridge, the Fort Bayou Bridge, and the Wilkes Bridge on Highway 605, just south of Seaway Road in Gulfport.
The Popp's Ferry Bridge closed when it got stuck in the open position because of a mechanical problem, which was only worsened by the icy conditions.
Those braving the dangerous roads Tuesday afternoon were being turned around at the foot of the bridges by police officers. One of those drivers in Gulfport was Lamaysha Pleasant.
"I'm actually just getting off work and I'm trying to get home," Pleasant said.
The Bayou Portage bridge and the David Lorassa bridge on Henderson Avenue in Pass Christian also closed.
Police Officer David Spence said, "The top of the Henderson Avenue bridge is equivalent to an ice skating ring it's very, very slick."
Even though barricades block both sides of the bridge, one gentlemen decided to go around the road closure signs.
"If there are barricades up for your safety, do not cross the bridge," Spence said. "Especially if the barricades are up. That means they are iced over and it's circumventing a traffic control device. We are not taking it lightly; we are issuing citations."
