SOUTH MISSISSIPPI (WLOX) - South Mississippi is now under a Winter Storm Warning until Wednesday at 6am. Meteorologists with the National Weather Service predict we'll see freezing rain first, slowly turning to sleet and snow generally north of I-10 throughout the afternoon and evening Tuesday. Expect ice accumulations of one quarter of an inch, and snow amounts of less than one inch.
A hard freeze is likely on Wednesday morning across the entire area. Wind chill values in the single digits are possible on Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning.
Driving conditions will become especially hazardous beginning by daybreak Tuesday morning through mid-morning. And hazardous conditions will persist throughout the day Tuesday and Tuesday night.
Since temperatures will not rise above freezing for any significant period of time, hazardous driving conditions are likely to persist into Wednesday.
The ice also has the potential to cause significant problems with power lines and tree limbs becoming too heavy.
