Middle school club puts on skits for a good cause

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

After two weeks of preparation, Bayou View Middle School's Builder's club entertained crowds of shoppers for a good cause at the mall. The students performed eight skits that were based on various ways in which the public could help people. The skits were titled everything from soup kitchen, coat man, difference maker and fashion show.

The Builder's club advisor Amanda Bruhl said during the skits the students collected coats for the Salvation Army.

"It really wasn't about the coat drive. It was about the kids knowing and educating everybody else that there's other ways to get involved in the community, and they wanted to get the message out there," said Amanda Bruhl the Builder's club advisor. "The whole idea behind our show was that they were able to get a message out with every skit."

For the members of Builder's club, the skits were a fun way for them to help people.

Builder's club member Kaitlyn Monroe said, "It's fun because we got to do stuff together as friends."

"It's important to help people in need, because some people that have no shoes and some of them don't have good clothes, and they really need it because they get sick," said Builder's club member Alexis Monroe.

"We collected coats today [Saturday], and a couple weeks ago we did a canned food drive for Thanksgiving and helped people with the holidays. They might be low on money and they need some food. We just collect canned food items and help them," said Builder's club member Gabe Byrd.

In addition to the students working to put on the event, the Gulfport Kiwanis Club also assisted in the event.

Gulfport Kiwanis Club President elect Reece Roberts said, "Our club sponsors a lot of youth activities for the Gulfport school system. And one of the things we do is the middle school program. That's a leadership through service program we do with sixth, seventh and eighth graders at the Bayou View Middle School," said Kiwanis Club member Reece Robert.

Bruhl says she hopes that because of this event people will realize there's more ways of helping people beyond donating money.
