SOUTH MISSISSIPPI (WLOX) - Two adults and a child died Friday night in an accident on Highway 11 in Pearl River County. A second child riding in the car was airlifted to University Medical Center in Jackson, and is listed in critical condition.
Driver Freddie Berrage, 50, and his passenger, Danielle Moye, 33, were pronounced dead on the scene. Both were from Picayune. Moye's son, 8-year-old Elijah, was taken to Highland Community Hospital in Picayune, where he was pronounced dead.
Pearl River County Coroner Derek Turnage said the car was going over the Boley Creek Bridge when the driver lost control. Two other vehicles were involved in the accident.
Dozens of accidents across South Mississippi have been blamed on frozen overpasses and bridges. That's why officials closed bridges and portions of Interstate 10 Friday night. State Trooper Jason Gazzo tweeted around 8:30pm that Hwy 90, I-59, and I-10 at the MS State Line all had some type of closer or blockage.
Crews with the Mississippi Department of Transportation were working to salt/sand every bridge on Interstate 10. MDOT District Engineer Kelly Castleberry told WLOX News crews were sent down from Meridian to help with the emergency road work.
Sixteen vehicles were involved in a crash in the south bound lane of Highway 49, near School Road. And the West Hancock Fire Department reported working an accident involving 27 cars near the Mississippi/Louisiana state line.
Gulfport Police Sgt. Damon McDaniel said everyone should stay off the roads overnight. If you do have to drive, reduce your speed and use extreme caution.
