"Yellow Dot" program launches in Lowndes Co.

LOWNDES CO., AL (WSFA) -

The "Yellow Dot" program, which provides detailed medical information that can be lifesaving in the event of a car crash, is launching in Lowndes County.

Those who take part in the program are given a large, yellow dot decal to place in the lower left corner of their rear windshield or near the license plate of their motorcycle.

If they become involved in a crash, first responders trained to look for the decal will know to check the glove compartment or storage bin for a yellow dot folder containing detailed medical information, contact information and a photo to gather vital details about the victims involved.

"Having this information following a crash helps emergency responders positively identify the person, get in touch with family or emergency contacts, and ensures that the person's current medications and pre-existing medical conditions are considered when treatment is administered for injuries," explains Alabama Yellow Dot Coordinator Lora Weaver.

To keep the program from being targeted for identity theft, officials say the information in the folders do not contain any birth date or social security information and there is no storage database.

The program is free for all ages and is funded by the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs/Law Enforcement Traffic Safety Division (ADECA/LETS).

Those looking to sign up for the program in Lowndes County can enroll at the John Hewlett Detention Center or at the Hayneville or Fort Deposit police departments.

The clock is ticking. Gulfport leaders say if the U.S. Department of Labor doesn't sign a memorandum of agreement by July 31, Gulfport will lose $30 million to restore the city's job corps complex. And that's the last thing Gulfport leaders want. So they're hosting a barbecue today to rally together the community and get more support for the restoration project.
