PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Two construction workers repainting the Lower Buckeye Jail were killed Wednesday afternoon after their lift tipped over, the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office said.

The identities of the victims were not immediately released.

MCSO spokesman Brandon Jones said while the investigation is continuing it appears the lift had been placed on a downhill slope.

The workers were on the lift on the northwest side of the building on the sixth story, said Jones.

Both victims worked for Riddle painting, Jones said. H&E Equipment services owns the crane, he added.

Inmates in the recreation yard saw them fall and reported it to tower officers, Jones said. The inmates thought people had jumped off the roof, said Jones.

Both workers were pronounced dead at St. Joseph's Hospital.

The call originally came in as a cardiac arrest at 3250 W. Lower Buckeye Rd. around 12:30 p.m.

There is a car wash fundraiser on Saturday, Jan. 25 from 8 a.m. to noon at the southeast corner of Rural and Guadalupe in the complex behind Circle K. The address is 6485 S. Rural Rd. in Tempe and all the proceeds will go to their families. Donations are also being accepted at BMO Harris Bank under "Johnson & Urbina Benefit" account no. 481438396.
