FLORENCE, AZ (CBS5) -

A 23-year-old undocumented immigrant is in the Pinal County Jail after a bizarre series of incidents that included false reporting, an escape attempt and burglary.

The events began when a woman in an unincorporated area of Maricopa called deputies about 8:15 a.m. Tuesday to report a man, later identified as Alfredo Aurtuno, of Mexico, had knocked at her door and barged in when she opened it, according to a Pinal County Sheriff's Office spokesman.

The suspect told the woman he had been shot, that someone was trying to kill him and that his family was being held hostage.

Deputies and medical personnel found Aurtuno unharmed and under the influence of drugs, and he continued to insist his family was being held captive, the spokesman said.

Deputies searched the homes of Aurtuno and his neighbor, but found nothing to back his claims. Aurtuno, who admitted to using cocaine during the day, told deputies he was in the U.S. illegally, a claim supported by the U.S. Border Patrol, the spokesman said.

Deputies arrested Aurtuno for false reporting and was taken to the Casa Grande substation. When a deputy opened the patrol car door, the handcuffed Aurtuno ran, the spokesman said.

The deputy chased Aurtuno on foot into a nail salon, where the suspect grabbed a cell phone, nail file and a long metal object before continuing to run, the spokesman said.

A Pinal County K-9 helped to eventually take Aurtuno into custody.

Aurtuno was booked into the Pinal County Jail for escape, burglary and false reporting and an immigration hold was also placed on him, the spokesman said.
