Hinds Supes vote to cancel 'Airwave' mowing contract

Posted: Updated:
HINDS COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The Hinds County Board of Supervisors has canceled one of two controversial contracts with Airwave, LLC.

Airwave is a small company run by Stacey Stowers in Jackson. His business partner, Nathan Hargrove, has been the spokesperson for the company in the past. The contract pays slightly more than $10,000 per month for mowing and other maintenance around the radio towers.

"Keeping the lawn mowed around the towers to making sure the generators are operating correctly, and you also have to deal with the lights on the communications towers," says Board President Darrel McQuirter. "Anywhere we can save money, we need to do it."

A shift of power on the Board facilitated the 3-2 vote on Tuesday to cancel the contract and let Hinds County employees take care of the mowing and other site maintenance.

"We can get the sheriff's department to do that, and our public works," says District 4 Supervisor Tony Greer. "At our last meeting, at our January meeting I should say, we declared ourselves a new board, and new boards are not bound by commitments or previous boards."

Airwave also has a radio maintenance contract with the County that has paid out more than $4 million over a six-year period. Supervisors Peggy Hobson-Calhoun and former Supervisor Phil Fisher repeatedly voted against renewing and paying for that contract. The radio contract, and other county contracts, are currently under review.
