Series of brush fires continue due to humidity

Posted: Updated:
CLINTON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Fire crews across the Jackson area had their work cut out for them this afternoon, battling several brush fires.

Another fire broke out in Clinton on Monday afternoon and was so intense that Clinton, Jackson, Hinds Co, Firefox and Raymond fire crews all pitched in to put it out.

The blaze started in some bushes near the Old Vineyard Subdivision off Clinton Raymond Road.

We are told that the flames did not spread into any of the backyards in the subdivision.

Clinton Fire Chief, Barry Burnside, told WLBT's Annette Peagler that the brush fire was caused by a bee keeper in the neighborhood using smoke to tranquilize the bees.

Burnside told Peagler that the reason we've seen a number of these types of fires recently is because of the humidity change.

"The ground is soaking wet but the brush above it is dry, dry as a bone basically. Walk through it and you can see the dust coming off of it so it's very dry. When you're burning take all the precautions and be very careful at this time of the year," Burnside warns.

There have been no reported injuries from the incident.

As Ja-Naya Thompson's short life was celebrated, there were a lot of tears and hugs as hundreds of people paid their respects during the visitation and the funeral service. People told me they went to Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church for two reasons, to mourn the loss of five year old Ja-Naya and to show support to the parents who must now face life without their beloved child.More >>
