MLK parade hits the streets of Gulfport

Absolutely beautiful weather drew thousands of people to the annual Martin Luther King Coast Wide Celebration Parade in Gulfport.

While fun was found everywhere, with beads flying and marching bands playing, the day was filled with important messages rooted in the life of Dr. Martin Luther King.

The Coast Wide Parade has always been held in Biloxi. This is the first year the event has rolled in Gulfport.

There is historical significance to choosing 19th street as the parade route.

"It's important to know that going down 19th really means something. You had many civil rights leaders here on the coast who worked in this area to make sure everything was equal. This is historic and wonderful" said Committee Chairwoman Dr. Persharon Dixon.

College and high school bands entertained the crowd.

A high school from Chicago even made the trip to South Mississippi.

Yolanda Wallace, the NAACP Mother of the year said it best" Let freedom ring. From our brothers and sisters from all mankind. We want everyone to have a beautiful year. We celebrate and we commemorate" said Wallace.
