HICKORY TAVERN, SC (Fox Carolina) -

Laurens County Coroner Nick Nichols identified the human remains found on Sunday as those of an elderly woman who went missing in July 2013.

Nichols said the remains were identified as 76-year-old Dorothy Madden, of Boyce Page Road in Laurens County.

Sheriff Ricky Chastain said the remains were found on Stallion Drive just after 2 p.m. Sunday.

Chastain said someone found a purse which appeared to belong to Madden while walking in nearby woods on Saturday.

Madden went missing from her home in July 2013. She suffered from Alzheimer's disease.

Chastain said the Foothills Search and Rescue team brought in their dogs and searched the area again on Sunday and discovered the remains, which deputies believed belong to Madden.

Searchers said they scoured the area back in July when Madden disappeared but said the woods were very overgrown with plant life. Searchers said the cold weather helped clear the area and allowed them to locate the remains.

Madden was identified by a metal implant in her lower back that matched X-rays, according to Nichols.

Nichols said the manner of death and cause of death are unknown at this time.

Chastain said it was too early to tell if any foul play was suspected.
