GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

Over 400 Mississippi Power customers were left without power early Friday morning after a car leveled a power pole. Gulfport police are now saying the man driving the car was under the influence of intoxicants.

According to Gulfport Police Chief Leonard Papania, Derek Allen Britz, 30, of Gulfport was arrested Friday morning and charged with DUI, driving with a suspended driver's license and no proof of insurance. Authorities said Britz was headed westbound on East Pass Road when he lost control, hit a power pole and flipped his car around 12:30 a.m.

A police investigation revealed that Britz was driving under the influence.

Britz was released from the Gulfport Police Department after booking but is ordered to appear in court for his charges.
