Letter to judge: Murder suspect fires attorneys

LAWRENCE COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

A murder suspect who investigators said confessed to being a hitman for a Mexican drug cartel wants new lawyers.

Jose Manuel Martinez wrote a letter to Lawrence County Judge Mark Craig. The letter tells the judge that he has fired his two court-appointed attorneys and that he wants a new hearing so he can get better counsel.

Martinez is currently in jail in Lawrence County, accused of killing Jose Ruiz in March. Investigators said he told them he also killed dozens of people in other states.

Martinez is due in court March 13.
