In these days of military spending reductions, we have some good news about the Gulfport Seabee Base. The training for about 600 reservists is being moved from Jacksonville, Florida to Gulfport.
The Naval Construction Battalion Center opened in 1942 and has seen many changes in the seven decades since it was established. This move that is expected to add about a million dollars to the local payroll, indicates the Gulfport base remains viable. A promising sign should another round of base realignment talks begin.
The Seabees have long been a welcome part of the South Mississippi community. They volunteer in our community. Seabees worked shoulder to shoulder with the people of Mississippi recovering from Hurricane Katrina. The Seabees built 450 million dollars in new facilities.
We are glad the Seabees are here and we welcome the new battalion to South Mississippi.
