BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Students at Berry Middle School will be returning to school on Thursday after a coolant leak cancelled classes on Wednesday.

Officials with Hoover City Schools evacuated Berry Middle School due to fumes and water in the school. Employees first discovered a large amount of water inside the school when they arrived this morning. They called the Hoover Fire Department and began investigating.

Because of the odor and water, students and faculty were evacuated to the gym at Spain Park High School. Around 8:45 a.m., school administrators decided to close and send everyone home for the day.

School spokesperson Jason Gaston says no students or staff were in danger but fumes from the coolant leak were a concern.

An outside professional cleanup crew cleaned up the water. Classes will resume Thursday.
