NBC12 viewer replaces Chesterfield athlete's stolen wheelchair

CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) -

NBC12 viewers turned a heart-breaking story into one of compassion and generosity, replacing a Chesterfield athlete's specialized wheelchair.

The athlete's mother reached out to NBC 12 Monday after crooks stole her son's customized wheelchair from a shed in the back of a home off Rainwater Road.

Chase was devastated when crooks rolled off with the specially made chair that prevented him from tipping over on the court.

"It brought tears to my eyes," said viewer Kevin Kitrick. "I was thinking of my own nephew and if that were to happen to him."

Kitrick and his nephew, Robert, are pretty close. They recently traveled to New York where they ran into former NBA player David Robinson.

"That made his day," recalls Kitrick. "That was pretty much one of the last times Rob smiled."

Robert would be rushed to the emergency room hours after the encounter. He has been hospitalized for weeks, but he made a generous decision from his sick bed.

"Get my chair over to him," Kitrick says Robert declared. "And let him use it."

Kitrick notes the specialized chair is not cheap. They can cost between $5,000 and $10,000.

"It's unbelievable," said Chase's mom. "Completely unbelievable."

Basketball practice starts Wednesday night. Chase can now get back on the court.

"Definitely," said Mom. "It's like our legs. He's getting them back."

Kitrick says this is just the beginning.

"This is an interim chair for Chase so he can get back in it immediately," said Kitrick. "We will get him a new chair from the funds that we raise within the next week or two."

Police are still looking for any information on this case. If you can help, give crime solvers a call at 748-0660.
