HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Huntsville Police arrested and charged a man with murder in connection with a fatal shooting that happened on New Year's Day.

Police arrested 24-year-old Lopez Marittia Rice, of Huntsville, for the shooting death of Mercedes Morris at home on the 2700 block of Bridge Road in Huntsville.

Police said several offenders approached the home on the night of Jan. 1 and began shooting at the house. Investigators said Morris was waiting inside a car in the driveway of the home at the time of the shooting. She was transported to Huntsville Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Rice is currently being held in the Madison County Metro Jail.
