Governor Bentley to make 4th State of the State Address

Posted: Updated:
MONTGOMERY, AL (WBRC) -

Alabama Governor Robert Bentley will give his fourth State of the State Address on Tuesday night after the first day of 2014 regular session.

After taking a cheerleading, populist tone last year, we could expect much of the same tonight. An election year means it is all about pleasing voters; voting and saying what you need to get back in office.

That does not mean there are not pressing needs. The state's Medicaid agency is asking for more money than last year and the state has the most overcrowded and understaffed prison system in the country.

It is unclear whether the governor will challenge lawmakers to take on heavy lifting. The governor and his administration have been tight lipped on his priorities for 2014.

There has been some talk of trying to speed up the legislative session, cramming in three day weeks for lawmakers to get home before April. But with budget issues, we will have to keep an eye on that.
