Opelika pedestrian killed after being struck by SUV

OPELIKA, AL (WSFA) -

The Opelika Police Department is investigating after the weekend death of a pedestrian who was struck by a vehicle while crossing the street.

The collision happened around 8:25 p.m. Saturday night, Jan. 11. Police and medics responded to the scene in the 2000 block of Waverly Parkway on reports that a person had been hit by an SUV.

Officers found 42-year-old Anthony Shane Hurst in the roadway. He was rushed to the emergency room of East Alabama Medical Center where he died shortly after his arrival.

Authorities say it appears that Hurst attempted to cross the highway and walked into the path of the westbound SUV where he was struck.

The case will be presented to the grand jury but no charges are expected to be filed. Investigators say alcohol is not suspected to be a factor in the accident. 

The case remains under investigation by Opelika Police and the Lee County Coroner's Office.
