Chargers snap 4 game slide with win over West Georgia

Snapping its longest slide in eight years, the University of Alabama in Huntsville men's basketball team earned a big win in Gulf South Conference action on Saturday evening as it defeated visiting West Georgia 79-72 at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall. The Chargers improve to 7-7 (3-4 GSC), while UWG slips to 10-5 (3-4 GSC).

The triumph ended what had been a four-game losing streak for the Chargers – the program's longest since a five-game streak in the 2004-05 season.

Ronnie Mack hit four of his five 3-pointers in the second half to score a team-best 20 points, and Conner Blasi was a terrific 5-of-6 from the floor while going 8-of-9 from the charity stripe to score 18 while also grabbing a game-high eight rebounds to help guide the team to the win.

Wayne Dedrick joined the pair in double figures with 12, and Greg Gardner scored nine – all at the free throw line – and added nine assists and four rebounds.

The visiting Wolves – who were paced by Zach Taulien's 22 points – held the advantage for much of the opening minutes of the first half, building up a 16-9 lead at the 9:46 mark of the period, but the Chargers would score 11 straight points over the next three minutes to completely erase the deficit and grab a 20-16 lead  with just over seven minutes left in the half.

With a Dedrick jumper falling at the buzzer, UAH would establish an eight-point margin at 34-26 at the half, and the hosts would outscore West Georgia 16-6 out of the break to build up a 50-32 lead with 15:38 remaining in the contest – the 18-point advantage the largest of the night for the Chargers.

The Wolves would whittle their deficit down to just five points at 72-67 with just over a minute left in the game, but UAH proved to be clutch at the charity stripe, knocking down seven of their eight attempts in the final minute to preserve the victory.

For the contest, UAH shot 51.2 percent – its best field goal percentage since a 52.6 percent showing against Delta State on Dec. 21 – and the visitors connected on 39.3 percent of their attempts including a strong 13-for-31 performance from 3-point range.

Also winning the battle on the glass were the Chargers who outrebounded UWG by a 36-25 clip.

Provided with a respite after playing four games in seven days, UAH will be off for a week before hosting Lee next Saturday, Jan. 18 at 5 p.m.
