Community support pours in for Gulfport fire victims

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

The images of this terrible fire that destroyed the home of a family of four touched a chord with many. Thanks to the power of the Internet and social media, offers of help came quickly.

"A lot of people reached out, from Facebook and from WLOX.com," said Mathew York.

York and his fiancé Alisea Menna, couldn't believe all of the responses their story received, and from people they don't even know.

"It's nice to see that people really care and they reached out," said Menna.

"I was so sad yesterday and cried all day yesterday, but after seeing all the comments on WLOX and Facebook and everybody, they don't even know us and they want to help."

One of those comments came from Michael Kirk who offered his Bay St. Louis store, Mystic Spirit, as a drop off location for donations.

"Anybody can bring anything they think would be needed," said Kirk.

"Just like Katrina, when you have no house. What do you need first?"

Kirk says helping others is what brings him joy.

"Helping anybody is what anybody should be doing first. You find joy in life by helping people, not by waiting for people to help you.

Joy from others is exactly what this family has received from complete strangers.

"Thank you everybody!" said York and Menna's two little girls.

For those of you who want to help out the family, there are three places in South Mississippi that are taking donations:

-Mystic Spirit located at 400 Blaize Avenue in  Bay St. Louis.

-Negrotto's Fine Art Gallery located at 2645 Executive Place in Biloxi.

-Essential Herb Cottage located at 652 East Railroad Street in Long Beach.

The family is requesting:

-Size 10 kid's shirts and size 11 kid's shoes for a boy.

-Large men's shirts and pants sizes 32W 32L and 36W 32L and size 10 and 11.5 men's shoes.

-Large women's shirts and pants size 13, bra size 38D and shoe size 10.

14 years as part of the Ole Miss football program as a coach or player has prepared Matt Luke for this opportunity. Admittedly it doesn't come under the circumstances he might've envisioned. But with a Rebel bloodline that runs 3 generations deep, the position fulfills a lifelong dream. "I can truly tell y'all today that this is my dream job," Luke said Monday at his first press conference as Ole Miss interim head coach. "It's a job that I've been preparing my whole li...

The Pascagoula Panthers open the 2017 football season on the road. In fact, their first three games are road contests. That scheduling quirk may give field turf crews just enough time to get War Memorial Stadium ready for the September 8 home opener. The wet weather in South Mississippi is placing quite the burden on construction workers as they attempt to complete stadium renovations. The project was suppose to be finished before the beginning of Pascagoula's football season.
