Nashville group wants to open a charter school in Jackson

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

It's been months since lawmakers voted to allow charter schools in the Magnolia State. Now, an organization that's already had success in Tennessee wants to bring those educational opportunities to Jackson.

Nashville Prep started its first charter school in Tennessee back in 2010. Now, they're making history in Mississippi as being the first organization to file charter school applications here.

The subject of charter schools brought with it a certain degree of controversy among lawmakers, but it passed in the 2013 session.

Officials with Nashville Prep say that's expected and welcomed as they begin their work here. They also say these preparatory schools have already achieved high degrees of success in Nashville. Now they're focusing their efforts on starting one in Jackson.

And while some may hear the words "charter school" and think something negative, those with Nashville Prep say people everywhere just want a quality education.

"For Jackson, there were alarm bells going off," said Nashville Prep founder Ravi Gupta. "When we came down here, we looked at a bunch of different cities, but Jackson stood out just dramatically because the need is so big and the community is very, very, the community's been asking for it."

Gupta says they hope to have the first charter school open by 2015. It will be called Reimagine Prep.

Gupta and others have been speaking all across the metro area for the last two days about the new venture.
