BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

Icicles could still be seen Wednesday thawing out in East Biloxi. Several feet above the frozen ice is an important piece of equipment which also froze in the arctic blast.

"What we had happen was the cold weather froze up one of our sensors that regulates the pressure in our water towers," Biloxi Spokesman Vincent Creel said.

The biggest problem was for high rise hotels in East Biloxi because when the sensor malfunctioned it caused the booster pump, which helps maintain the pressure to the higher parts of the building, to cut off. That left many hotel guests with little or no water.

"Our public works crew went to work right away to find out what the problem was and what they traced it to was the sensor," Creel said.

Water pressure was restored about two hours later.

"The last thing you want is for someone to say, 'I came to Biloxi for my vacation and didn't have good water pressure.' We don't want that reputation and we know none of our hotels want that either, so we are doing what we can," Creel assured.

He said this is the first time something like this has ever happened in the city. You see, the sensors used to be on the ground in a protective housing, but FEMA recently required the city to raise the equipment several feet off the ground.

"While we are protected from the flood waters, God help us, the cold weather is what got us this time," Creel said.

City engineers have contacted the equipment manufactures and installers to find out what to do to keep this from happening again.
