2014 is here and still there is no movement from Congress to curb or delay the dramatic premium increases for flood insurance. While, there is a bill in the Senate to stop the skyrocketing rate hikes caused by the Flood Insurance Reform Act of 2012, so far no vote.
The intent of the 2012 act was to make the flood insurance program solvent. While that may be a good idea, it is clear that act has to be reformed. When people in Mississippi and across the country who are in flood prone areas become economically devastated over insurance premiums, we are clearly headed in the wrong direction.
We support the proposal to put premium hikes on hold and review just how FEMA came up with the recent maps that are driving people from their homes.
