Sprinklers left on overnight turned plants into icicles at USM Gulf Coast in Long Beach.
A water fountain in Biloxi also froze Monday night.
BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -
The cold weather is causing some problems across South Mississippi. Overnight, there were sporadic power outages across the area. WLOX News crews have placed phone calls to a Mississippi Power representative to get a status report on power outages. At one point, about 200 homes in the Saucier area were without electricity. So were individual homes in many areas of the state. But, no widespread outages have been reported.
A spokesman for the city of Biloxi said there was a drop in water pressure Tuesday morning at Beau Rivage Resort, but crews were quickly working to fix the problem.
VT Halter Marine closed its Jackson County shipyard Tuesday and Wednesday. The closure is for hourly production employees, which is the bulk of the workforce.
How cold is it this morning? Good Morning Mississippi anchor Meggan Gray put water in an ice cube tray at 6:00. Less than an hour later, that water froze.
During Good Morning Mississippi, the state's MEMA director Robert Latham stood with WLOX News reporter Doug Walker in 14 degree temperatures outside the state capital and said, "We're not used to this." Latham emphasized every precaution was being taken across the state to protect people and their properties from this bone chilling weather. "I think the biggest concern for us is what happens when it warms up and we have frozen water pipes thaw out and people have problems they didn't know they had," he said.
