Jackson area residents stock up on cold weather supplies

Posted: Updated:
JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The low temperatures forecast for the next two nights in the Jackson metropolitan area are between 10 and 12 degrees, which will cause some major problems for the city's water pipes.

The cold weather has already produced water main breaks like the one at Wightman Street and Keener Avenue, in the inner city of Jackson. More are expected with the lows forecast for Monday and Tuesday nights.

Many stores sold out of the Styrofoam protectors for outside water faucets. It did not happen at Revell Ace Hardware stores. After selling more than 350 of them in the days leading up to Monday, they restocked and had plenty left.

Water faucets not protected are in danger. Scott Copeland, manager of the Revell Hardware in Pearl, says using the protector is about all you can do.

"When it get too cold,  If they (water pipes) are not insulated properly they will break, said Anthony Williams, a veteran of 14 years with Roto Rooter as a plumber.
