Agawam swears in new police chief

As of 12 p.m. on Sunday, the city has a new police chief.

Lt. Eric Gillis was sworn in during a ceremony at the Roberta Doering School. The event took place with several local and state officials on hand.

Gillis is an Agawam native and has spent the past 16 years on the police force.

Mayor Richard Cohen told CBS 3 that there were several qualities that helped Gillis stand out from the rest.

"His calmness, he's very rational, he thinks things through and makes decisions on what is correct, as opposed to what might be a personal or emotional feeling," Cohen said. "He's able to handle all areas of his job in a professional and excellent manner."

Gillis plans to hit the ground running with his new position. He said there is already one specific area he plans to target in the very near future.

"One of the things I'd like to do is communicate with the public in a manner that people are accustomed to these days," Gillis said. "We have no social media capability in the department and I think that is one of the things that is going to serve us better. It will put our community in touch with what we're doing and allow us to better communicate with them."

Along with Gillis, all of the city's re-elected and newly appointed officials were sworn in at Sunday's ceremony.

The ceremony included the swearing in of Cohen, who began his seventh term in office.
