With an arctic blast headed toward the Ark-La-Tex, pet experts say its important to take precautions to protect your four-legged family members.
"They are our family, they may be furry family members, but they are our families," said Tammy Rushing, a 25 year pet professional and owner of Luxury Grooming.
She recommends taking extra steps to ensure pets are safe when frigid temperatures roll through. "The best thing to do is keep your pet with you inside," she said.
"If a dog has to stay outside, definitely have a coat and maybe even some little booties, to protect the pads of their feet," Rushing explained.
If your animal spends the majority of its time outside pet experts say, purchase an igloo or a doghouse. "I would make sure they have straw in their dog houses, fresh water and fresh food, because they need their nutrition," said Rushing and added that if it gets too cold, animals shouldn't be outside at all.
If anything, owners should let pets stay in the garage, but keeping them inside should be the ultimate choice. "That's really where the danger comes in, if it's too cold for you to be outside it's too cold for your baby," she said.
Doctors say one of the clear signs of pets being too cold is extreme shivering and watch out for frost bite on their paws.
