Water main break causes sinkhole outside of Tower Square

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

Record low temperatures on Saturday may have had something to do with a water main break that has affected Tower Square.

The break was first reported around 10:30 a.m. and caused a sinkhole on Bridge Street.

Western Massachusetts Electric Company was on site for much of the day on Saturday and told CBS 3 that there is no electrical safety issue.

They also said that Tower Square is the only building affected by the break, and water has entered the building, damaging a transformer.

Two underground WMECo crews, as well as an electrical maintenance crew and several supervisors were evaluating the situation.

Both WMECo and Springfield police told CBS 3 that there is no timeframe yet to have the break fixed.
