LAUREL, MS (WDAM) -

Two Laurel men are dead after being gunned down at a South Laurel residence Friday night. Both of the victims were shot multiple times as they were exiting the front door at 1406 Woodlawn Drive about 11 p.m.

Laurel Police say Justin L. Curry, 19, died at the scene, while Bennie O. Owens, 31, died in surgery at the hospital.

Initially, police said it was a drive-by shooting, but later, they said they could not confirm that.

They said the two victims did not live there and were visiting friends at the time of the shooting.

No arrests have been made, but police said they've obtained critical evidence and are interviewing witnesses.

"We have some pretty credible leads as far as a possible motive, but at this time, it's too early in the investigation to release that," said Tyrone Stewart, chief of the Laurel Police Dept. "We do not have any evidence saying this was any type of gang retaliation or gang-relation that was involved. The majority of the information that we're receiving has led us to other motives," he said.

If you can help Laurel Police solve the case, call Sgt. Earl Reed at (601) 319-6898 or Crimestoppers at (601) 428-STOP.

As Ja-Naya Thompson's short life was celebrated, there were a lot of tears and hugs as hundreds of people paid their respects during the visitation and the funeral service. People told me they went to Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church for two reasons, to mourn the loss of five year old Ja-Naya and to show support to the parents who must now face life without their beloved child.More >>
